On the first day of January, we always eat lentils.

It’s a simple ritual, one we return to every year. Not because it promises certainty, but because it steadies us. January is cold and damp, a Kapha time of heaviness and slowness, and this small bowl of warmth feels like an anchor. It reminds us that before we leap, before we decide, before we act, we need to be nourished.

Astrologically, 2026 is not a quiet year. There is fire in the sky — momentum, urgency, and a strong current of reinvention. Old structures loosen. New paths appear quickly. Opportunities arrive that ask for a response before we’ve had time to overthink them.

This isn’t reckless fire. The invitation of 2026 is to meet intensity with grounded wisdom. To recognise when a door is opening and to step through it without fear. To trust the body’s yes. Commitment matters this year, but so does agility — the ability to pivot, to move, to leap when the moment is right.

This is where ritual becomes important. Fire without grounding burns out. Vision without nourishment scatters. Lentils — humble, earthy and sustaining — slow us just enough to listen. Prosperity, in this context, isn’t about playing safe. It’s about having the inner resources to take risks that feel true.

Across cultures, lentils are eaten for abundance at the start of the year, their coin-like shape symbolising wealth. But in 2026, wealth feels broader than that. It’s measured in confidence, clarity and self-trust. In knowing when to hold steady, and when to move decisively.

This is the lens I bring to astrology. Not just what’s happening, but how to meet it. Where the year asks you to be brave. Where commitment will stabilise you, and where flexibility will open doors. A reading becomes less about prediction, and more about orientation — understanding the landscape so you can move through it with intention.

On New Year’s Day, we eat our lentils slowly. Bowls and spoons, candles lit, the table set with care. We talk about the year ahead not as a list of resolutions, but as a landscape. Where might we leap? What feels worth the risk? What do we want to devote ourselves to?

New Year’s Lentils for Prosperity

Serves 2–4

Ingredients
A little oil (olive oil works well)
1 onion, finely sliced
A few handfuls of dried lentils (green or brown)
1 cinnamon stick
1 whole dried chilli
1 tsp cumin seeds
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Optional: 1–2 cloves garlic, 1 bay leaf
Water or light vegetable stock
Optional to finish: butter or ghee

Method
Heat the oil gently in a heavy-based pan. Add the onion and cook slowly until soft and lightly golden. Add the cinnamon stick, dried chilli, cumin seeds, salt and pepper (and garlic or bay leaf if using). Let the spices warm and release their aroma.

Add the lentils and stir well, coating them in the spiced onion base until they shine. Pour in enough water or stock to cover generously. Bring to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to the lowest setting. Cook slowly until the lentils are soft, sticky and sweet, and the liquid has reduced to a rich, golden broth.

Finish with a little butter or ghee if you like. Serve as it is in warm bowls, or alongside rice. Eat slowly, with intention.
